Geely × Volvo: the $1.8B deal behind Lynk & Co and Polestar

How a 2010 acquisition put Swedish engineering under Chinese badges

In March 2010, Zhejiang Geely Holding signed to buy 100 per cent of Volvo Cars from Ford for US$1.8 billion, then China's largest overseas automotive acquisition. The deal closed that August, and it quietly became one of the most consequential purchases in modern car history.

What each side got

Volvo got investment and access to the world's largest car market while keeping its Gothenburg engineering base. Geely got safety engineering, platform know-how and credibility. The clearest fruit is the CMA platform, co-developed and shared across Volvo, Polestar, Lynk & Co and Geely models.

Lynk & Co (2016)

Launched in Berlin in October 2016 as a joint venture, originally Geely Auto 50%, Volvo Cars 30%, Geely Holding 20%. Lynk & Co builds on CMA with Volvo-derived engineering. In November 2024 the group reshuffled: Zeekr (Geely's EV arm) took majority control and Volvo exited the shareholding.

Polestar (2017)

Volvo's former racing partner was relaunched in October 2017 as a standalone electric-performance brand, jointly owned by Volvo and Geely Holding. It listed on Nasdaq in June 2022. Polestar is the partnership's premium-EV face: minimalist Nordic design over shared group hardware.

The Jamaica angle

Geely sells in Jamaica (Coolray, Okavango, and the EX-series EVs), and the brand's engineering benefits from the Volvo relationship. The Coolray's 1.5T engine family, for instance, comes from the co-developed engine programme. Provenance won't fix a pothole, but it explains why these cars feel more resolved than their price peers.

The bottom line

If a Geely is on your shortlist, judge it like any car (test drive, warranty terms, parts answers) but know the engineering floor is higher than the badge's age suggests. Check our known-issues panel per model for what owners actually report.

Frequently asked questions

Is Volvo still Chinese-owned?

Yes. Geely Holding has owned Volvo Cars since 2010; Volvo listed publicly in 2021 with Geely retaining control.

Do Geely and Volvo share parts?

On shared platforms and engine families, substantially. That's the point of CMA and the joint engine programme.
