Huawei and Changan: the tech inside AVATR, and what the Deepal in Jamaica actually gets
One alliance, two brands, and a spec question every local Deepal buyer should ask
Changan is the Chinese giant with the deepest Huawei ties, and it matters locally: Changan Jamaica sells the Deepal S05, S07 and G318 right here in Kingston. Two brands carry the story. AVATR is the premium play, and Deepal is the volume one. Here is what each really is, and the one spec question a Jamaican buyer should put to the dealer.
AVATR: the CHN alliance
AVATR started life in 2018 as a Changan and Nio joint venture, then was reborn in 2021 on what the company calls the CHN architecture: C for Changan, H for Huawei, N for Ningde (CATL). The roles are clean. Changan builds the cars, CATL supplies the batteries, and Huawei provides the smart driving and cockpit tech. One precision worth keeping: Huawei is the technology partner, not an owner. Changan holds about 41 per cent and CATL about 14. In fact the money flowed the other way. In August 2024 AVATR paid RMB 11.5 billion for a 10 per cent stake in Huawei's own automotive unit.
AVATR in 2026: honest picture
The lineup spans the 11 and 07 SUVs and the 12 and 06 sedans, all offered as pure electric or extended range. The business side has been rough: sales through May 2026 were down more than half year on year, and the company refiled for its Hong Kong listing in July 2026. Brilliant tech has not yet translated into steady volume. That gap between engineering and commercial traction is worth remembering whenever a new brand promises the world.
Deepal: Changan's volume EV brand, sold in Jamaica
Deepal launched in 2022 as Changan's new energy brand, and its S07 SUV is a mainstream product built on Changan's own EPA1 platform. In China, the S07 carries Huawei's Qiankun ADS SE driver assistance, a camera based system covering highway assist and automated parking. It became standard across the Chinese range in the September 2025 update. Locally, Changan Jamaica (run by importer Bella Castle International on Old Hope Road) lists the S05, S07 and G318.
The question to ask at the showroom
Here is the honest part: we could not confirm that the export version of the Deepal sold in Jamaica carries the Huawei driver assistance package. Independent reviews of right hand drive export units describe more basic assistance features. So if the Huawei tech is part of why you want the car, ask the dealer to show you, in the spec sheet and on a test drive, exactly which assistance systems your unit has. A brand's China spec and its export spec are not always the same car.
The bottom line
Treat the Huawei association as background, not as a promised feature. Judge the Deepal you can actually buy: test the driver assistance yourself, get the battery warranty in writing, and check our known issues panel on each model page for what owners report.
Frequently asked questions
Is Huawei part owner of AVATR or Deepal?
No. Huawei is the technology partner. AVATR is owned mainly by Changan and CATL, and Deepal is Changan's own brand. AVATR actually bought a 10 per cent stake in Huawei's car tech unit in 2024, not the other way around.
