Mercedes-Benz has partnered into China twice, with very different endings. smart became a thriving 50:50 joint venture with Geely. Denza, a 2010 electric-vehicle venture with BYD, struggled for a decade, then became one of BYD's crown jewels after Mercedes stepped away.

smart: Mercedes designs, Geely builds (2019- )

Announced in March 2019 and formally established in 2020, smart Automobile Co. is a 50:50 venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely Holding, headquartered in the Hangzhou Bay area with registered capital of 5.4 billion RMB. The division of labour is clean: Mercedes leads design; Geely does the engineering and builds the cars in China. The result is the #1 and #3 electric crossovers sold in Europe and Asia.

Denza: a slow burn that BYD turned around (2010-2024)

BYD and Daimler founded the venture in May 2010 (the Denza name arrived in 2012; first car late 2014). Sales were weak, roughly 23,000 cars from launch through 2021. A late-2021 restructuring cut Mercedes to 10 per cent, and in September 2024 Mercedes exited entirely. Under 100 per cent BYD ownership, Denza is now BYD's premium technology and luxury brand.

What the two stories tell a buyer

First: BYD didn't just grow fast. It spent 14 years alongside Mercedes learning premium manufacturing, and it kept the school. Second: Geely is trusted by Mercedes to engineer and build a Mercedes-designed product. When you look at a BYD Seal or a Geely in a Jamaican showroom, that's the pedigree underneath.
