The Payload Trap: Which SUVs Really Can't Carry 5 Adults and Luggage

Every vehicle has a weight limit for people plus cargo. Here is that number for the SUVs and pickups Jamaica actually shops, in plain English.

Five adults at 165 lb each is 825 lb. The Jetour T2 is rated to carry 826 lb in total, people and cargo together. Your crew alone maxes out the limit before one suitcase goes in. That number is called payload, every vehicle has one, and most people never check it. We pulled the official figures for the SUVs and pickups Jamaicans cross-shop and translated each one into plain terms: how many adults, plus how many pounds of bags.

What payload actually means

Payload is a simple subtraction. Every vehicle has a maximum loaded weight the maker signs off on, called the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating). Take away what the vehicle weighs empty, the curb weight, and what is left is payload: the combined weight of everything the vehicle can add. That means the driver, every passenger, the luggage, the cooler, the tools, a roof box, even accessories bolted on after purchase. Seats tell you how many people can sit down. Payload tells you how much all of them, plus their things, may weigh. A 5-seat SUV with a low rating can run out of capacity with five average adults before a single bag is loaded. That is not a defect. It is simply what the maker rated the suspension, brakes, tyres and body to carry all day without being overworked.

Why warranty and insurance people care

Running past the rating stresses exactly the parts that wear expensively: springs and shocks, wheel bearings, brakes, the clutch or gearbox on hills, and the tyres, which run hotter when overloaded. Manufacturers publish the GVWR because that is the load the vehicle was engineered and tested for, and a pattern of overloading can complicate a warranty conversation when a suspension or drivetrain part fails early. Insurance works the same way in spirit: after a crash, assessors look at how the vehicle was being used, and a vehicle loaded far beyond its rating can make a claim conversation harder. None of this needs scare talk. It is the same idea as a ladder rating: the ladder does not snap the moment a heavier person steps on it, but nobody should live at the limit. If you are unsure how your insurer treats overloading, that is a fair question to ask them directly.

The numbers, translated

Everything below comes from the manufacturers' own spec sheets, brochures and owner's manuals, all linked in the Sources list at the end. We converted each rating into the same human currency: adults at 165 lb (75 kg) each, with whatever is left shown as pounds of bags. Two patterns jump out. Pickups and body-on-frame SUVs carry the most by far. And several popular crossovers, including some of the newest arrivals, are rated under 900 lb (400 kg) in total, which a full cabin of adults meets or beats on its own.

Payload = GVWR minus curb or tare weight, taken from the manufacturer documents in the Sources list. Markets weigh cars slightly differently (some sheets exclude fuel or the driver), so treat figures within about 40 kg (90 lb) of each other as equal. Adults counted at 75 kg (165 lb) each. Where a maker publishes a range across trims, we show the range or the most conservative figure. Some models are missing on purpose: GAC publishes a curb weight but no gross rating for the GS8 on any official page we could verify, and Toyota has not yet published weights for the 2026 RAV4, so neither gets a number here.

The Jetour pattern, explained honestly

Jetour's own documents are unusually consistent: on every published configuration of the T1 and T2, the rated total is exactly 375 kg (826 lb) above the curb weight, and on every Dashing and 5-seat X70 Plus it is exactly 300 kg (661 lb). Think about what 300 kg means in practice: four adults, and the bags stay home. These are honest, published numbers, and for a couple, a small family or town driving they are plenty. The trap only appears when the brochure seats five, or seven, and the arithmetic quietly cannot. Where the trap bites: three everyday runs

Airport run, five adults and four checked suitcases at 50 lb each: 825 lb of people plus 200 lb of bags is 1,025 lb, about 465 kg. The Triton, Hilux, Tank 500, Prado, J8 and RAV4 handle that without thinking. A T2 is past its limit before the suitcases even load. Country run, four adults plus a weekend of supplies, two coolers and a case of drinks, roughly 750 lb (340 kg): comfortable in anything rated above 400 kg, but past what the Dashing is rated for. School run, two adults and three children with schoolbags, roughly 500 lb (about 230 kg): every vehicle on this list handles it easily, which is exactly the point. Payload is not a reason to avoid a car. It is the number that tells you which trips the car was built for.

Open the driver's door and look at the sticker on the door jamb or B-pillar. Find the GVWR, sometimes written as gross vehicle weight or maximum permissible mass. Then find the curb, kerb or unladen weight in the owner's manual spec pages, or weigh the vehicle at a truck scale or weighbridge with a full tank. Subtract one from the other. The result is what your specific vehicle, with its specific options, is rated to carry, and it beats any brochure. Remember that anything added after purchase, a crash bar, roof rack, drawer system or big sound system, subtracts from that number before anyone even sits down.

The bottom line

Payload is the most useful number nobody quotes. If your regular life is two or three people and groceries, every vehicle in the table works, so buy on comfort, warranty and price. If your life regularly means five adults plus luggage, treat 500 kg (about 1,100 lb) as your comfortable floor, and look hardest at the pickups and the big body-on-frame SUVs. What is payload in simple terms?

Only if seven times their actual weight fits under the rating. Seven adults at 165 lb is 1,155 lb, about 524 kg, before bags. A 7-seater rated near 500 kg is really a 7-seater for children and short trips, not for seven adults with luggage.
